Issue 3: LEGEND
Onto the last issue, it took alot more time and money to make which was expected however I could not complete 5 copies in time. My concepts and ideas would be more suited for an individual artist book so I had to find a balance between time and the outcome I ideally wanted.
I had alot of fun making this issue due to the chaos of it with type in all sorts of sizes and directions and just generally not following normal design conventions to prove my point across. I was heavily inspired by one of the discussions in class on the artist book Memoires by Asger Jorn and Guy Debord where they took on a more radical approach - repurposing found materials, such as newspaper clippings, photographs, cartoons, and advertisements. It's navigating a map with not direction and that was what I wanted to achieve in this issue. Things I found difficult include:
- Printing double sided in the accordian format proved alot more difficult than I though as it would not align properly.
- Printing out the cover as I wanted to have pink ink on brown paper as I wanted a matte look but apparently it's not quite possible to do that unless it's white ink so I just made do with the white.
- The accordian format proved to be quite hard to navigate as a few people didn't know it was double sided. There was alot of issues as well with not alot of clarity with how to interact with the book and I think if I did this again I would try to include a annotation.
- Cutting out the pop outs was very meticulous and involved alot of work and patience. However it was quite relaxing and it added to the DIY look of it compared to if I wanted to laser cut it.
- Printing issues with the paper stock I bought. Lots of ink splotches and colour not translating well.
From the feedback, the star of the show was the paper cutouts/popouts which I was very happy with. I think what I would do next time is invest in a good exacto knife as it broke halfway through but I thought it came out pretty well despite it all.
